Design a catalogue

Course description:

This workshop focuses on the design and creation of a 24- or 32-page bound brochure under the guidance of Prof. Armin Lindauer. Participants will design a portfolio of their own work or develop a selected narrative into a professional print product.
The curriculum combines theory and practice and begins with concept development. Individual topics such as format, aspect ratios, layout, cover, preliminary pages, color systems (CMYK, Pantone, etc.) accompany the practical work. The instruction covers the entire design process, from the initial draft to the finished brochure. In the second week, the focus is on combining the various tools used, such as typography, photography, drawing, illustration and diagrams. Bio:

Armin Lindauer studied at the University of Düsseldorf, Visual Communication at the art school Konstanz and the Berlin University of Arts (HdK Berlin). In 1984 he became a master student of Prof. Helmut Lortz at the HdK Berlin. After graduation, he worked as a freelance graphic designer and visual artist with a studio in Berlin. From 1984 to 1997 he taught graphic design, typography and photography at the HdK Berlin. From 2000 to 2024, he was Professor of Editorial Design and Typography at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.
His applied work focuses on books, corporate design, poster and stamp design. He has received national and international design awards for his work, including the iF Award Gold, Red Dot Design Award ‘best of the best’, 100 Best Posters, Type Directors Club New York, and the Joseph Binder Award Silver. His artistic work is in the fields of painting, drawing, and photography. In 1987, he received the art promotion award as a draughtsman from the city of Nuremberg.
He designs postage stamps for the Federal Ministry of Finance. For the 2018 issue year, he designed the Friedrich Schleiermacher stamp, in 2019 the Blaibach Concert Hall stamp and the series ‘For Sport – Legendary Olympic Moments’. He also designed the ‘For Sport’ series for 2022, featuring the sports of fistball, skydiving and wakeboarding.
Armin Lindauer is the author of books on design topics, including Helmut Lortz | Denkzettel, Helmut Lortz - leicht sinnig, a typographically staged homage, The Berlin Wall - The beginning of the end, a conceptual photo series. Experimental design — Visual method and systematic play, with Bettina Müller. Lindauer lives and works in Berlin and Mannheim.
