Course title:

Designer Portraits

Course description:

There are designers who inspire us through their visual signature, their way of working, or the conceptual approach behind their projects.
In this course, participants are invited to engage creatively with a designer of their choice. The outcome will be a portrait of that designer in poster format. Each poster should reflect and condense the individual design personality, showing a personal and visual interpretation of their work and character. Photographs may be used as a starting point, but they must be transformed, edited, or abstracted in some way. The execution can also be illustrative or typographic, as long as it maintains a clear connection to the chosen person. A special focus will be placed on working with analogue techniques.
We are all designers with our own means of expression. In the second part of the course, the focus shifts to self-portraits. The questions now become: How do we portray ourselves? What kind of visual language represents us? How do we feel comfortable expressing who we are – or who we want to be?
This course offers an opportunity to take a personal inventory and to work simply in the way we enjoy most. We don’t just dream about it – we have the freedom to do it.

Bio:

Daniel Wiesmann (born 1978) is a designer based in Berlin. He grew up in Stuttgart, in the south of Germany. After his studies, he spends three years working with the design studio cyan before setting up his own studio in 2010. Since then he has worked with a diverse range of clients, including choreographer Sasha Waltz, artist Olafur Eliasson, the prestigious Ludwigsburg Festival, and Markthalle Neun – a historic market hall and melting pot for speciality markets and culinary innovation in Berlin. Many of his projects have been realized in close collaboration with the designers Jule Erner and Robert Radziejewski, with whom he also shares his studio.
Rather than focusing on a single discipline, Daniel brings his passion for poster design – shaped by his studies with Niklaus Troxler at the State Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart – to all aspects of his work.
Daniel has been a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) since 2019. His posters have received numerous awards and are part of many public collections.
