Course title:

True and Untrue Type Design

Course description:

The workshop explores type design as an experimental practice. Participants will develop their own type design principles and shape vocabularies, and investigate how to translate digital forms into virtual and physical environments and back. Through iterative making and playful research, the course expands typography beyond conventional applications into a method for defining one’s own visual language.

Bio:

Johannes Breyer is a graphic designer based in Berlin. He studied in Zurich and worked at the design studio NORM before graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2013, together with Fabian Harb, he founded Dinamo Typefaces, a digital type foundry. In addition to typefaces, they develop books and other physical products—sometimes as self-initiated projects, sometimes on commission, usually in collaboration with a global network of contributors. Their clients include Rimowa, Warp Records, On Running, Spotify, Are.na, Alicia Keys, Discord, Patreon, and the International Olympic Committee.
