Biography:
Director of Shenzhen Pingshan Art Museum, Principal Architect and Co-founder of URBANUS Architecture & Design Inc., Principal Architect at Liu Xiaodu (LXD) Studio.
In 1999, Liu Xiaodu co-founded URBANUS, which has become one of the most influential architectural practices in China. Architectural design projects co-led by Liu Xiaodu have received numerous prominent awards, and have been exhibited and published worldwide. Liu Xiaodu has participated in numerous domestic and international architectural exhibitions and academic events, including the 6th São Paulo International Biennale of Architecture and Design in 2005, the Lisbon Architecture Triennial in 2007, Taking a Stance in Rotterdam: Daring Design | Daring Design in 2008, and the Tulou Solo Exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Liu Xiaodu is an academic committee member of the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (UABB) and has participated in multiple editions. His major curatorial works include the China Pavilion at the 2016 London Design Biennale, the 2017 Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen), the 2019 Shenzhen (Pingshan) International Sculpture Exhibition, and the co-curation of the 2021 Shenzhen Design Week.
Since July 2019, Liu Xiaodu has served as the director of the Shenzhen Pingshan Art Museum, initiating a series of exhibitions and activities in art and design. He has produced major international contemporary art exhibitions such as Synchronicity and Materialization - Daniel Knorr Solo Exhibition, and launched cross-disciplinary exhibitions like Nine-Tiered Pagoda: Spatial and Visual Magic, the Shenzhen Contemporary Artists Series, and Nomads in the South. Liu Xiaodu has actively contributed to the art and design ecology of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Under his leadership, the new museum team has, in just five years, transformed the Pingshan Art Museum into a widely recognized and influential institution, being selected as one of the ten most dynamic contemporary art museums in China by authoritative art media for two consecutive years.
