Branding & Giving Feedback

Brief description:

What is branding? What is corporate design? Does visual identity mean the same thing? Are there any basic principles that should always be followed? And are there different approaches for large and small clients?

After talking about definitions and approaches to the design process, we will focus on the doing: finding core ideas, designing logotypes, creating applications - always with the aim of creating a unified experience that appeals to all the senses. The result will be a presentation of your branding project.

Along the way, we will practice giving each other constructive feedback - always with the aim of improving our communication as designers, but also the quality of our work.

I look forward to accompanying you on your journey to holistic design.

Biography:

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Sven Ingmar Thies studied graphic design at Braunschweig University of Art and completed his final thesis in Tokyo and Yokohama.

Since his time at university, he has focused on a holistic design approach that seamlessly connects to other design disciplines, other specialist areas or even to handicrafts. This conviction was intensified further by two professional engagements at Henrion, Ludlow & Schmidt in London, where brands were holistically developed, and at Kitayama Institute in Tokyo, where he learnt about the interplay between architecture and design during a two-year postgraduate scholarship.

Besides being involved in project-related work for brand agencies Landor (today, Landor & Fitch) and Enterprise IG (today, Superunion), he founded Thies Design in 1998, which develops tailored brand experiences for enterprises and institutions. His clients include one of Austria's largest stock corporations, OMV, as well as medium-sized and small companies such as USM Haller, Publisher Hermann Schmidt, HMA Architects and Orlando di Castello restaurants.

In addition to his professional activities, Sven Ingmar Thies has been teaching communication design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna’s “Class for Ideas” since 2011.

He is the editor of the book Teaching Graphic Design, for which he wrote down his own teaching experiences and interviewed 24 educators in Austria, China, Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA.
