Poster Playground: 7x7 ways to design a poster

Brief description:

The participants, skilled or beginners, will learn various digital and analogue techniques to combine images and texts into striking designs. 

The lessons will include the topics among the following: i) General Composition ii) Photography iii) Silhouettes iv) Perspective v) Layering vi) White Space and vii) Typography. 

The participants can use and combine their own interests with poster design techniques to create new approaches to their work. Every unit starts with an input lecture about a certain technique the boundaries will be set every day to specialize in a certain technique yet the possibilities are endless. 

The session then can be used for individual or group feedback consultations. Every evening the students will collect the designs of the day so the outcome can be documented in a booklet that combines the participants’ designs! 

A phone with a camera and a laptop with Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop are required. Sketchbooks and pencil + paper are optional but recommended.

Biography:

Studio Tillack Knöll, Design Practice (est. 2018) is a design practice that concerns itself with the visual and spatial aspects of communication. They design exhibitions, wayfinding systems, books, visual identities and digital experiences for a variety of clients involved in architecture, art, science and commerce as well as cultural institutions and NGOs. Besides creating their visual output, they enhance their practice with editing, writing and coding. Studio Tillack Knöll gives workshops and design talks. Their work has been internationally acclaimed and has been published in various magazines and newspapers. 

Sven Tillack (*1986) is a founding partner of Studio Tillack Knöll Design Practice. He lives and works in Stuttgart Germany. He has a background in photography and advertising as well as corporate campaigns. Sven wrote the book Exploriso: Low-tech fine Art (2017–2020) and specializes in printing techniques since his studies. Since 2018 he teaches regularly at various design schools such as the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts.
